About this deal

That completes the cabling. Use the thumbscrew supplied with the HUE+ to secure the controller to your PC case, tidy up your cables and close up the case. Let’s power on, and install the NZXT CAM controller application. Terry Walsh/IDG In the recent trend to make sure absolutely every PC component is outfitted with RGB LEDs, the major motherboard vendors have kitted out their boards with lighting. We built our example PC with the MSI Z170 Gaming Pro Carbon, which has a fairly subtle LED line tracing around the board and an RGB zone along its right edge. The color is configurable with MSI’s software. It’s a minor lighting element compared to an LED strip, but it does help to illuminate the small details of the motherboard surface. And motherboards are cool! Plenty of other cooler companies make coolers outfitted with LEDs ( Cooler Master, for example) but with single-color LEDs. Remember if you buy one of those, you’ll need to plan your color scheme around it.

The second thing to look for is the type of lighting the strip actually produces. If you’re looking for white lighting, examine the color temperature, and whether it’s adjustable. If you’re shopping for RGB, you’ll want to find out how the strip’s RGB lighting works. Can you set different colors for different sections (or even individual lights), or does changing the color impact the entire strip at once? Is the lighting static, or can it be dynamic? Are there presets and, if there are, can you customize them and create your own? The EZDIY-FAB EZDPI129-2 ARGB strip kit is an excellent option for users that value choice in how they customize their PC or gaming setup. With a soft silicone exterior and brilliant 66 ARGB LEDs, this kit delivers a diffused light that results in smooth and long-lasting color effects. Additionally, this kit works with 5V ARGB-compatible motherboards to offer full control over the patterns and colors to set the mood. While the connection cord and mounts only come in one color, the strips and mounts are small enough to conceal behind PC hardware. There aren’t many better ways to spruce up your gaming rig than with one of the best PC LED strips on our list here. They’re affordable and easy to set up and can be the difference between a boring rig and an eye-catching one. Beware! You can lose hours of your life customizing light settings—you’ll find a host of effects available that are tons of fun to play with. Spend some time experimenting with the presets and then you can fine-tune your LED settings to perfection. Terry Walsh/IDGRemember, while RGB strips can produce white, only RGBW strips can produce a clean white like standard light bulbs. Once you know what you need, make sure you measure your space to ensure you get proper coverage. If the length of your light strip doesn’t exactly match the space, see if the strip can be cut or trimmed, and how that could impact the colors it can display. If you’re retrofitting an existing PC with LED lights, powering and synchronizing multiple components is made far easier with a dedicated lighting controller. Just as a fan controller regulates power and spin speeds of your case fans, a lighting controller manages power and color synchronization of LED lights.

Most LED RGB strips are designed for indoor use and are not waterproof; thus, keeping them safe from spills and liquid damage will prolong their useful life. You can find IPX-rated water-resistant LED strip lights, but they are less flexible and harder to mount due to the stiffness of their water-resistant coatings. If your gaming workstation happens to be in a steam room or poolside cabana, however, then water-resistant LED strip lights might be a good idea. How to Choose the Best RGB Strips for a PC LEDs: 600 | Color: RGB | Wattage: 40 watts | Length: 32.8-feet (x2 16.4ft rolls) | Extendable: No | IP Rating: IP65 | Smart Home: Yes | Warranty: 18-month LEDs: 10 per strip, 40 total | Color: RGB | Length: 410mm | Extendable: Yes | Smart Home: No | Warranty: 2-yearWhile connecting the strips to the controller is very simple, now’s the time to figure out the ideal location for your LEDs and how you’ll route the wiring. The HUE+ includes 100mm, 300mm, and two 500mm extension cables, which are used to connect the individual LED strips. Yep, your cooler can join in the RGB party, too. For our build we used an NZXT Kraken cooler, which has an RGB LED built into its pump. The color of the LED was easily configurable with NZXT’s CAM software in Windows. Corsair’s line of liquid coolers mostly have RGB LEDs, too. Unless you go for a more specialized cooling setup, those are both great options, though we prefer the design of the Kraken.
