About this deal

The body has been identified as missing journalist Charles Younger but now the question is what happened to Mr Younger was it an accident or was it fowl play. In November 2051, a young meteorologist is checking her weather station in the western Scottish Highlands when she comes across a body in a patch of ice in a corrie.

We now get to meet police detective Cameron Brodie who has been sent to investigate the body on the mountain. The author presents a fascinating vision of things that may come - floods, famine, vast areas of land becoming unlivable, the deaths of millions of people across the globe. In Scotland the melting ice caps halt the Gulf Stream effect which means it is frequently hit by brutal snow and ice storms. I have always looked forward to a new a new thriller by Peter May and out today 19 January is his new standalone novel A Winter Grave (Riverrun) and based in the Scottish Highlands and there is clear climate warnings through this brilliant and very readable thriller. What May does with out being preachy, is to get you to focus on the possible outcomes of global warming. I have always enjoyed this authors writing and even though I wasn’t fully convinced by this novel I still enjoyed it.

He’s been given the devastating news that he has only months to live, but he needs to meet up with Addie, the meteorologist first, he has something really important to tell her before it’s too late - because Addie is his estranged daughter. Many parts of the world are underwater or so hot as to be uninhabitable and the world's population is on the move. There are some good plot twists that keep you hooked, the pace is fast and there are some Hollywood action movie worthy scenes which give a dystopian feel. Various wars sparked by the resulting wave of migration are taking place, and in Glasgow racial unrest is rife. A Winter Grave is the latest standalone thriller by prolific author Peter May, and it was intense, gritty, fast-paced and chilling (in both senses of the word!

There’s even a role for future technology the prospect of which might either thrill you or appall you depending on how you feel about flying in a pilotless plane or living in a 3D printed home. Set against a backdrop of a frighteningly plausible near-future, A WINTER GRAVE is Peter May at his page-turning, passionate and provocative best. Chilling, as well as the location and weather for its setting, is the future portrayed by climate change in this tale of murder, political betrayal, and family estrangement. Instead he makes a massive comment on it, one which I - and I hope many others - have worried about, and will continue to argue.
