About this deal

It has all the subtle elements of an Islay whisky with the smoke and brine you come to expect, but also a complexity that makes it so well balanced with that hint of lemon. Sitting in the centre of the vibrant island community, from which we take our name, we are a thriving, expressive and unique distiller, true to our idyllic Hebridean home.

Peaty whisky from Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, named after a previous incarnation of the distillery. We are delighted to announce Ledaig 18-Year-Old has been awarded The Whisky Exchange's Whisky of the Year for 2023! The peat turns more smokey on the palate, as if bonfire embers are fighting sea spray that’s dampening the fire out. Inactivity and nothingness continued however right through the vast majority of the 20th century before Ledaig’s previous owners, Burn Stewart Distillers came to the fore and purchased the Mull distillery. When it reopened in 1878, the Ledaig deeds and ownership were passed from pillar to post before closing for a second time in 1930, as there was a drop in the demand for whisky due to prohibition in the United States. On each occasion, the water level in the small, private loch used to supply water to the distillery had dipped to such an extent that proper rainfall was needed to replenish it to a satisfactory level. The reek from the burning peat is absorbed by the barley through the husk of the grain, and the reek remains through the mashing, fermentation and distillation processes, eventually leading to a single malt with a highly distinctive peaty, smoky taste.

Hand selected and hand filled by the team at Tobermory Distillery, this cask strength, 25 year old single malt is part of our Warehouse 1 Collection. Please note local Duties and Taxes may be charged by Customs in the destination country and the receiver is responsible for paying them.

Production was upgraded in 1990, with the distillery becoming capable of producing 1m litres of spirit a year. The peated expression produced at Tobermory is heavily peated, with Ledaig becoming a brand of its own in 2007. It is heavily peated with 30-40ppm of phenol, resulting in a robust expression full of sweet smoke and earthy notes. Despite a colourful history marked by closures, financial troubles and even a change of name, today Tobermory is a thriving, expressive and unique distillery, true to its idyllic location on the Hebridean island of Mull.Expect notes of caramel, fruit and rose petal, balanced with hints of oak, leather and an unusually dry and nutty finish.

Ledaig Sinclair Series is named after John Sinclair, who was an innovative kelp merchant, in 1797 he applied for a lease of land known as Ledaig. It also makes superbly smoky single malt under the name of Ledaig (that name isn't simply a coincidence, by the way - Ledaig was one of the distillery's previous names!
