About this deal

Summary: Atlee Pine, an FBI special agent assigned to the remote wilds of the western United States. Mind you, though, that the early chapters in which we learn much about our heroine did give me cause for concern. Notorious serial killer Daniel James Tor, was caught and convicted of other murders, and while there’s no proof, Atlee believes he knows what happened to Mercy. Obviously he’s written other female characters but Atlee is the standalone lead and he comments that she’s one of the most unique characters he’s created.

She’s a tad extraordinary, almost an Olympic level athlete and well versed in a number of fighting methods but I like that she’s also a big solid girl and not too cliched / extreme in either her prickliness or her good-naturedness. Despite having an almost unique female lead in Atlee, and a 60-year old female side-kick, this is not one of Baldacci's best. Established by David and his wife, Michelle, the Wish You Well Foundation supports family and adult literacy programs in the United States.I hate cliche characters, and I’m tired of reading the same character with a different name/background/job.

The narrations by newcomer Brittany Pressley (female voices) and veteran Baldacci-reader Kyf Brewer (male voices) were both excellent.Since the beginning of the story takes place in the Grand Canyon, there are descriptions of what it looks like. I don’t want to spoil anything (even though I REALLY want to), so if you are inclined to, visit my Goodreads version to see spoilers. Aided by her able assistant, Carol Blum, Atlee finds herself in a world gone crazy as she is faced with desperate danger, horrifying murders, Russians, Chinese, Koreans and where she can trust no-one, not even the FBI.

The action stuff was pretty good but was a bit 'filled out' by the addition of some unnecessary and irrelevant writing. I was excited to start a new series by David Baldacci especially since I love so many of his other books and I had heard Long Road to Mercy had a female protagonist.

What a blast-off for Baldacci's most memorable protagonist yet--Atlee Pine is a heroine for our times, a fighter for justice we'd all be glad to have on our side. Although the trip to the prison to visit the serial killer felt a little too familiar, and raises other questions in the reader's minds, it was enough different and personal enough that it was not so similar to other stories in this genre. Atlee’s twin sister, Mercy, was abducted from their bedroom over thirty years ago, and Atlee has spent every day since wondering what happened to her. A couple of the park rangers who were involved in the dead mule / missing hiker case are suddenly transferred to a different National Park and Atlee is told to take a vacation.

But I'm one of those who go with the flow and accept a story for what it is - a story - and this is a good one. Now, Atlee Pine is tasked with an investigation which begins with a missing person in the Grand Canyon. It's seared into Atlee Pine's memory: the kidnapper's chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. David Baldacci is a name synonymous with excellence-a consummate storyteller who turns the conventional into unconventional. Long Road To Mercy, the first thriller to feature FBI Special Agent Atlee Pine, begins by introducing us to our new protagonist, and we learn all about her formative years spent with her family and the troubles that have plagued her ever since, saying more would spoil it for potential readers. In this, the first Atlee Pine adventure a trekking mule is brutally slain and the tourist who was riding it has gone missing, feared dead. Not only has the mule been mutilated, something has been carved on its skin and the man who rode her down the Canyon, Ben Priest, is missing too. Atlee’s pretty sure she now remembers seeing him in their bedroom when she was just 6yrs old but worries a little that she might be wrong. Not only that, her twin sister, Mercy, was kidnapped when they were both six years old and the killer was never found (traumatic past anyone? Pine is a loner happy to operate within the Bureau in a single agent office out near the Grand Canyon.
