About this deal

The story is told by a colleague who barely knows Raif, and that too adds a cold irony to the storytelling. He is admired for the determination with which he defended his political beliefs, which are anchored through his writing. And though Maria Puder is the sort of free-thinking new woman he could never have imagined possible, the two form an intensely platonic friendship, in which Maria becomes more male than female, and Raif more female than male. They include a leather jacket, a wristwatch, a pair of glasses, a shaving kit, a bottle of cologne, a notebook, a pencil case, a Balzac novel, another volume by Onegin, a notebook, a stack of well-leafed newspapers, and scattered photographs which are hard to see, except for one – of his wife Aliye – that has been artfully propped against his briefcase. Alexander Dawe has translated several works from French and Turkish including the short stories of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar and Sait Faik.

Madonna in a Fur Coat' is a pure definition of 'melancholy' and yearning for missed opportunities in life. Sabahattin Ali (1907-1948) was born in the Ottoman town of Egridere (now Ardino in southern Bulgaria). Was it Raif's peculiarities that made me feel seen, or Maria's reluctance to believe in the possibility of companionship? While he works in his olive fields, his only source of joy is Maria's letters, until one day the letters stop coming. We follow the life of Raif during the 1920s and 1930s while he lived in Berlin, Istanbul and Ankara.

She has published seven novels and numerous translations of twentieth century Turkish classics and contemporary authors including five books by the Nobel Prize-winning novelist Orhan Pamuk. He ends up at Wannsee, and his thoughts are occupied with questions of intimacy and a meaning in life as he thinks how Heinrich von Kleist and his lover committed suicide together at the very view, and he decides to go back to Maria's house. Wonderful description of life in Berlin at that time and also of what Turkey was like at that period. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. It's about this quiet guy, Raif, a quiet dreamer who favored the realms of his imagination over the concrete world, falling in love with a woman in a painting.

I really loved this book and read it in a day, hurrying to get to the end to find out what happened to Raif and Maria. At this point, we have an elegiac flashback told in Raif's own words: sadness, pain and longing infuse this tale of a seemingly soulless man. It is not hard to see how a novel carrying those dreams but set far away, in a long lost Berlin, might promise a refuge, and some hope, to young readers in Turkey. The narrator has fallen on hard times, and it is only with the help of a crass and belittling former classmate that he is able to find work as a clerk at a firm trading in lumber. With time, the newspaper ceased advertising itself as a weekly, promising instead to appear whenever it wasn’t impounded or whenever its editors weren’t locked up. They are only too aware that the space for free expression, and even free thought, is diminishing every day. Perhaps it was Ali's lyrical and introspective prose, each word carefully woven like work of an artisan, that lingered and gave a glimpse of the innermost thoughts and desires of his characters.
