As I did with the GP66 Leopard, I took a peek at how MSI tuned the amount of power the GF66's GPU could use. It's tuned to 85W, whereas the GP66 Leopard and its RTX 3070 were tuned to 130W. There's a big difference not only between those two GPUs but also between the amount of power MSI is allowing them to consume for performance. In principle, the MSI Katana GF66 can be opened fairly easily. There are 12 PH1 screws that fasten the bottom cover to the base unit. After removing them, you can then go around the gap around the cover with a plastic prying tool to get access to the insides. However, the provider of our testing unit loaner has asked that we don't break the manufacturer's seal. We therefore cannot offer you any views into the insides of our test unit.But peeking through the large fan vents, we can still take some guesses.

At 58.3%, the sRGB color space coverage of the new AU Optronics panel is worse than that of the panel in the predecessor model; at an average of 225 cd/m², the brightness is worse; and the response times are also worse. In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 33.9 °C / 93 F, compared to the device average of 33.9 °C / 93 F.
While the power supply was still sized very tightly in the predecessor, MSI has significantly increased this here and included a power supply with an appropriate performance of 240 watts. This means that the gaming laptop won't hit the limits of the power supply even under maximum load. Nagano Tsuyoshi, who created the most impressive game cover of “Romance of the Three Kingdoms V” that is beloved by gamers since 1990s is now collaborating with MSI.
Whenever a gaming laptop lands on my desk, and it's a true gaming laptop, not one of those super thin portable wannabes, I try to guess whether the manufacturer prioritized battery life over performance or vice-versa. With the GF66, I assumed it would be battery life.
