The whisky is 100% malted barley, aged in ex-bourbon barrels, bottled at 46% abv, and the distillery is located in Keith, Banffshire (Speyside region of Scotland). The name Aultmore is derived from the Gaelic word Ant-Allt Mor which means “big burn”. The “big burn” refers to the water source the Auchinderran Burn. A “burn” is a spring or source of water. In 2015, John Dewar & Sons launched the “Last Great Malts” collection in an effort to be more competitive in the growing single malt market. Among the line-up were three Aultmore releases – a 12 year old, a 21 year old travel retail exclusive, and a 25 year old limited release. An 18 year old was introduced at a laterdate. Finish: clean, medium length finish, with a slightly drying astringency, there's a bit of lingering floral honey-sweetness at the very end which makes this very easy to sip. The Aultmore distillery doesn't offer tours. It was re-built in 1971 with a more functional goal in mind; producing a consistent, reliable product to serve as a workhorse in Dewar & Sons' blends. So much for romanticism. About a year ago at Malt Nuts we tasted a lineup of 12 different Aultmores, all of which came from NDPs, and I feel confident saying this Aultmore 12 Years is a decent representation of the distillery character. It ranks as high or better than 9 of the 12 bottles we tried that evening and it’s hard to ask for more out of an entry level whisky.Aultmore was once found mostly in the blended whiskies of John Dewar & Sons (Dewar's White Label, Dewar's 12 Year Old, Dewar's 18 Year Old). Aultmore 12 Year OldSpecifications: I have to say I was thrilled to see this bottled at a respectable 46% ABV, not chill-filtered and left at its natural colour. These may seem like little, inconsequential details, but those little details provide a very favourable first impression to this enthusiast. Aultmore 12 Years is another release in Dewars’ Last Great Malts lineup and comes from a distillery that’s been quietly pumping out whisky in the central Speyside region of Scotland for over 100 years. It was built in 1896 by Alexander Edward who also owned Benrinnes and added Oban to his stable of distilleries just one year after Aultmore came online. The Aultmore 12 Years may be a little light and delicate, but it’s not the average young Speysider. Fresh spring-time nose, lots of apples, with some mineral touches that give it an old-school touch. A must in the entry level. Around € 45.

Nose (undiluted): this is a classic Speyside, light and floral with some green fruit notes (pears, green apples, green grapes), there's a touch of light, floral vanilla, but it's balanced by a clean (albeit brief) citrus note. Lemon and lime. It's not a bruiser like Laphroaig or Octomore, but it's very well-balanced.
