It most often affects older adults and gets more likely the more medicines you take. Hearing Things is a game spawned from the viral internet sensation that sees someone reading a phrase while the other wears headphones so they cannot hear what is being said. Hilarity will usually ensue as the headphone-wearing player guesses what is being said by reading their lips! These phrases are much harder to guess and can be used in spicing up your whisper challenge game. The hardest phrases to guess are the ones that are obvious but with a little twist. For example, “I lord You” instead of “I love you.”

Nothing throws you for a loop like when you swear you can hear something that doesn’t seem to have an explanation. If what you heard really doesn’t have a source, it might be an “ auditory hallucination.” It can range from a simple sound to hearing music so clearly, it’s hard to believe there’s no band or radio nearby.

This game is my gold mine. I rely a lot on lip reading, so this is where I excel. A lot of people, hearing and deaf/hard of hearing, do not rely on lipreading for communication, so this game challenges you to really pay attention to the way people speak and reinforces the importance of enunciating. I consider this almost the inverse of telephone. It’s frustrating but so satisfying when you do get it right! Therefore I’m hoping these games might simulate what it’s like to be deaf or hard of hearing and give people some insight into what we deal with day in and day out.
