My first radio was a Baofeng GT-3TP. This is a low cost, Chinese radio, which I know operators have mixed opinions about. Again, this blog is about sharing my experience with equipment or techniques. Overall, this radio comes at a great value. It’s a fully featured ham radio that sells at a very affordable price. It’s perfect for throwing in each bug-out-bag for members of the family. Unlike a super premium brand, you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars if you need to get a bunch of these radios. If you have older kids, they will probably enjoy learning the different features and you don’t have to stress over them being rough with these units.This is what everyone likes about these radios: more power. A standard UV-5R or GT-3 will deliver around 4 Watts on VHF and 3 Watts on UHF. Note: those few extra Watts won’t help you much if you want to extend your range. Range depends for 99% on other factors, such as terrain and antenna height. The battery will drain much faster though. When both ends have been connected, turn on your radio. Make sure it has enough power during the programming procedure. High Power: Maximize the 8W output power of the Baofeng GT-3TP handheld ham radio to get extended range and increased clarity during transmission. While the instruction manual isn’t great, it does provide enough information to get your radio set up and running with the basic functionalities. Be warned that anyone who is starting out with ham radios will face a steep learning curve.
