About this deal

This children's edition of the bestseller Black and British: A Forgotten History is beautifully illustrated in full-colour with maps, portrait galleries, timelines, photos and portraits. Acknowledging this story for the first time has led to new discoveries about the objects Fitzwilliam donated, the people who collected them, and the cultures that created them. But Fitzwilliam’s generosity was only possible because of the wealth his grandfather accumulated in part through the transatlantic slave trade. From Roman Africans guarding Hadrian's Wall, to an African trumpeter in the court of Henry the Eighth, Black Georgians fighting for the abolition of slavery, Black soldiers fighting for Britain in the First World War, Windrush and right up today.

David Olusoga’s thought provoking text charts the forgotten histories of Black people in Britain from Roman times right through to the present day. A clear concise book starting with the Romans and finishing with the Windrush and ensuing scandal to BLM protests. David was also one of the presenters on the BBC landmark arts series Civilizations alongside Simon Schama and Mary Beard. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. He is Professor of Public History at the University of Manchester, the author of several books and a columnist for the Observer, The Voice and BBC History Magazine , also writing for the Guardian and the New Statesman . Love Love Love it … Contrary to the poor reviews I read through the book and a large portion of the information is readily available in many different places of historic significance and institutions throughout the UK. The Guardian it truly sings in picture book form with the history made even more vivid via a trove of old paintings, maps and photographs combined with bold artwork by Melleny Taylor and Jake Alexander. He often makes work based on popular culture and current events, having created a Star Wars-themed zine and portraits of public figures such as Taika Waititi and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. In 1816, Richard Fitzwilliam donated vast sums of money, literature and art to the University of Cambridge, creating the Museum that is named after him.
